Coach Finally Sued For Those “Scarlet Letters”

February 11th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Finally, someone is taking Coach to task for those Cease-And-Desist letters I wrote about over three years ago.  And, I’m pleased to see it’s one of my homies.

Interestingly, the plaintiff actually worked for Coach and used her employee discount to purchase the bag.  I would think a personal lawsuit would have a bit less punch since that may have violated their employee guidelines–but it’s filed for status as a class action, so people who were not employees should be able to join the suit, including the key-chain seller mentioned in my original post.

The bottom line, like I said three years ago, is that it’s not about being banned from buying from Coach; it’s about Coach accusing a seller of selling a counterfeit bag when it is obviously authentic.  That’s just nasty. The suit alleges “violations of the state Consumer Protection Act, defamation, interference with her business relationship with eBay, and other claims.”

Good luck, Ms. Kim, et. al.  I hope you are successful.

I just read your blog of three years ago, I was SHOCKED!!!

The arrogance of a retailer to turn away business? Perhaps its sour grapes on COACH because they failed to forsee the success of Ebay-and after the fact wished they did it first.
I’ve never been a fan of COACH don’t own anything and certainly won’t now.
    Thank you for you story.

I commented a couple of years ago, after having received my letter as well. I’m still in shock that people are paying as much as $1200.00 for a Coach bag! I think that shocks me more than anything. Most of the bags today are very bubblegum, made in China and very poor quality. The bags in the outlet are generally made for the outlet and are even worse than those at the retail stores. Coach should be thanking their big buyers instead of turning them away. Before I ever paid $1200.00 for a Coach bag, I’m buying a new Louie..in fact, I just did, the Delightful GM! Love it and it will retain its value, unlike Coach that has become synonymous with a cheap teenie bopper bag!
For those who want to buy Coach to resell, and you think by paying cash you’re home free, think again. They insist on ID! Coach will continue to open outlets and continue to screen buyers, and those who buy too much will receive their letter too.
I’m glad someone stood up to Coach and won, perhaps if everyone who ever was wrongly accused by Coach (read their Ebay VeRo where they claim most of the bags on Ebay are fake) took action, they would rethink their policy! It’s the big buyers who made Coach what they are, not the people buying a bag or two a year. The bottom line is that Coach hates the fact that a “little guy” can end up making more on a bag then they can! I love it!
